Language

Welcome to the Language Page. Here you will be able to keep up-to-date on our current topics in Reading and Writing. Each section is organized by focus, curriculum expectation as well as a short explanation. As we progress through the unit you will see the expectation in Student Friendly Language and our Student Friendly Targets. If you would like more information on this process please visit the Parent Page.

Again this site is for you so if there is any information you would like to see here please let me know.

Reading

Focus: Making Connections

We have begun making connections while we read. This helps us to understand what is happening in a text by relating it to our own memories.

There are three types of connections:

1) Text to Self (T-S)

2) Text to Text (T-T)

3) Text to World (T-W)

In grade 1, we focus on the first two types and touch upon the last one. At this age, the world, refers to the child's own world rather than a global outlook.

Focus: Introducing the Daily Five and the Literacy Cafe Menu

This year in the our class we will be using the Daily Five in our literacy block combined with reader and writer workshops. The Daily Five is a system created by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. This program enhances literacy skills as well as fostering independence. Variations of it will be used throughout the primary division at UPS to maintain consistency within the classrooms.  The Daily Five incorporates five literacy activities: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing and Word Work. We will be learning each of these skills and building our stamina in each one. This program will be combined with the reader and writer workshops which involve particular attention to a skill such as narrative writing. The Daily Five and the workshop will complement each other in order to provide an effective and enjoyable literacy program for your child.

We will also be using the Literacy Cafe in our classroom. This focuses on key aspects in reading which then applies to our writing, as these two processes go hand-in-hand. The components of the Cafe include:

1) Comprehension

2) Accuracy

3) Fluency

4) Expand our Vocabulary

Throughout the year we will be learning specific strategies for each heading so that your child has many strategies to draw upon when reading.

Writing

We are still working on writing proper sentences and the students have made great progress. We have started writing our weekend journals on Mondays and soon we will begin making lists as well as procedural writing.

Focus: Getting to Know You
It is important at the beginning of the year to gather diagnostic evidence of your child's writing skills. This provides an important starting point in development of an effective programme for your child.

First term we will be focusing on how to write a proper sentence including, capitals, proper spacing and punctuation.
